Voices of Arrow Rock, The Professor
August 31st – 10:00am – Historic Christian Church
Gary Bradley-Lopez, playwright
James Alva Trigg was on his way to the Arrow Rock Big Spring to water his father’s team of mules when something spooked them, and they dragged him a considerable distance. He had just turned 14 years old in July of 1919 and his father said it was well past time for him to be working. As his son lay dying, John Trigg is faced with regret and doubt. Known as the “Professor” for his strict discipline as Arrow Rock’s first African American educator born free, he opens up to his wife, Mary Alice, about the pressure he feels to push their children and his students to make a better life as the next generation of free African Americans.
