Persimmon Creek Artist & Writers Residency Performance

The Persimmon Creek Writers and Artists Residency is an initiative designed to bring emerging and established African American writers, artists, and musicians to live and work in the historic Village of Arrow Rock. Each summer the residency program is comprised of two sessions, each of which features a unique resident. This year’s first resident is Sonié Joi Thompson-Ruffin, a renowned contemporary fabric artist, fabric designer, author, lecturer, and independent curator. Sonié has exhibited her textile artwork at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the White House Rotunda, the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, and numerous other locations. She is also the Founder of the African American Artists Collective and she recently ended her residency as curator of the American Jazz Museum’s Changing Gallery. She will present her residency work at Arrow Rock’s historic Christian Church.

Before her presentation, you are invited to meet Sonié at a bring-your-own picnic dinner 5:30pm on the lawn of Brown’s Chapel. After her presentation, enjoy live music, drinks, and stimulating conversation. WORKSHOPS – During her stay in Arrow Rock, Sonié will conduct two free workshops featuring an original pattern for a strip quilted bag. Participation in the workshops is limited and registration is required. The pattern is relatively simple for an intermediate quilter, but key to the success of the workshops is the exploration of how art can offer a way to reflect on the rich textures of personal and social identity. Each participant will be encouraged to tell a story in the composition of the bag through color, pattern and texture, and to contemplate the intersections of cultural heritage that is expressed in fiber art. The finished bags will be displayed and judged on May 28 during a public presentation and question and answer session with Ms. Thompson-Ruffin.

WORKSHOP DATES – Wednesday, May 18 5pm to 8pm – OR – Saturday, May 21 1pm to 4pm
