Lem has conducted extensive research on Black musical traditions and historical events in the Midwest over several years. His presentations integrate historical narratives with musical performance, examining material from the late nineteenth century. His performance practice has been recognized for its scholarly and artistic quality, and he is a regular performer at the Heritage Festival.
